OUTDOOR LIVING: BALCONY, PATIO, & FIREPIT

THE ASSIGNMENT:

MAKE A RICH, INVITING OUTDOOR LIVING SPACE THAT COMPLIMENTS BUT DOESN’T COMPETE WITH THE INCREDIBLE VIEWS

Located just east of Red Rock Canyon National Park, this home features stunning views of mountains on one side and the Las Vegas Strip on the other.

For the second-floor balcony off of the primary bedroom, we created a romantic enclave with bountiful white curtain panels that frame the stunning views, billow gracefully in a breeze like clouds you can touch, can be tied back during heavy winds, and can be closed for privacy from nearby neighbors.

The oversized wicker lanterns hold solar “candles” that illuminate automatically at dusk to create an impressively dramatic and unique accent.

Light is one of the Simplest ways to make a space feel special

Being mindful not to wash out the impressive expanse of city lights in the valley below, we used multiple sources of soft light to illuminate the balcony, such as these patterned shadow lanterns at ground level, the soft-glowing candles, and the solar string lights. The combination of these elements creates layers of warmth to surround the space with a variety of visual interest at every level.

The cozy egg chair and teak-trimmed loveseat provide seating options for cuddling up or taking space to enjoy independent activities, and the solar-powered string lights automatically fill the balcony with a soft ambiance when dusk falls.

With space for the whole family (and dozens of friends) to enjoy this picturesque backyard, this spring will be way more fun than last year’s! (This was just a dirt lot back then!)

Our goal for the backyard was to maximize the covered areas for year-round use with a fun and very comfortable porch swing and a modern concrete-topped dining table perfect for dinners al fresco.

Along the wall, we set up two large cushion storage boxes with zippered liners for the safekeeping of cushions and furniture covers in the off-season.

An easily overlooked, but key feature of this patio is the multi-purpose, sustainably sourced eucalyptus bench near the grill, to be used for:

  1. Extra seating so the grill master can socialize while cooking, and

  2. To be used as a place to set drink coolers or other party supplies when hosting gatherings, and

  3. A home for potted plants that could be enjoyed outside as well as through the living room window just above the bench.

We love what we do and could go on about it all day! But if you’re ready to see some other projects, just click the link below to see what else we’ve done.
